RAMP/U of I College of Medicine Project Goes National
After
a successful collaborative pilot project in Illinois, RAMP and the
University of Illinois - College of Medicine at Rockford’s Family
Residence Program designed a curriculum for Parent Partners in Health
Education, a project to train family practice residents to be more
sensitive when working with families where a child has a disability.
Parent Partners in Health Education, funded by the Illinois Council on
Developmental Disabilities, has received attention from several residency
programs across the country interested in incorporating the curriculum
into their residency programs. Residency programs from Georgia, Louisiana,
Michigan, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Tennessee and Illinois
have expressed interest in implementing the program.
For years, RAMP has heard horror stories on how some doctors tell parents
that their child has a disability. Even before the baby is born, some
parents have been encouraged to abort their baby because it would not be
“normal”. After the child is born, some parents feel that doctors do
not understand what it is like to raise a child with a disability, or do
not listen to what the parents have to say.
Parent Partners in Health Education matches residents to families of
children with disabilities. Residents make home visits to their parent
partners, providing the resident with the opportunity to visit the family
and child in their natural environment. Residents are also expected to
meet with the families in other setting, such as a physical therapy
session or a school meeting, any setting that will help the resident
experience the impact of having a child with a disability.
