Project 2009 names RAMP an Education Friendly Employer at the Freeport
School Board Meeting
During last night’s Freeport School Board meeting, Julie Bosma, RAMP’s
Executive Director, accepted an award on behalf of RAMP for being an
Education Friendly Employer.
Project
2009 was organized in 1995 in response to concern expressed by area
employers that job applicants lacked adequate educational skills and the
knowledge base necessary for employment. Community representatives
including local government, education, social service, law enforcement,
business and the faith community have developed a strategic plan for
improving education in the region.
RAMP satisfied the mandatory criteria for the award – to adopt hiring
practices that include review of high school transcripts and attendance
records and to actively participate in a formal education and
business partnership. RAMP was also praised for such things as
allowing employees to use sick time for when their dependents are home
sick from school and allowing employees to receive phone calls from their
children and/or their children’s schools wile working.

Community Leaders help raise awareness in DeKalb County for RAMP
In 1995, RAMP established an office to
serve DeKalb County to enhance the options of people with disabilities to
live independently. We believe in the independent living philosophy that
states, “people with disabilities want to play a major role in
society, and can with the right supports.” RAMP is here to provide
these supports.
Recently, we have established a goal to raise RAMP's
awareness among community leaders and the general public in DeKalb County.
We view this as vital to further integrate our mission into the fabric of
DeKalb County.
The first step in this effort was to host a focus group with a diverse
group of DeKalb County leaders. Kim
Kubiak of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, Sal Bonanno - DeKalb Associates,
Phyllis Ally and Phil Guirl of Stonebridge Holistic Consulting Agency,
Dawn Littlefield of the DeKalb United Way, Jerry Smith of the
Community Foundation, Jerry Lane of the DeKalb County Mental Health Board,
Ron Cerutti of American National Bank, Rena Cotsones - Director of
Community Relations at NIU, and Heidi Muntjanoff of Kishwaukee Community
Hospital have been working with RAMP, providing input about we could
become better known in the county and establish new relationships with
people who can help strengthen our organization.
