Parent Partners In Health Education

For years, RAMP has heard stories from parents about their interactions with the medical community. Some of the stories were very positive; however, others were very frustrating. Among the more negative encounters, parents have reported physician advice to abort their babies because the children would not be “normal.” Other parents perceived that their physicians did not understand the demands of raising a child with a disability or did not listen to their concerns. In response, RAMP has searched for ways to reach the medical community, to help increase physician understanding of people with disabilities, and improve their ability to provide quality treatment and support. In the spring of 2000, RAMP saw an opportunity to address those needs. The Illinois Council on Developmental Disabilities (ICDD) distributed Requests for Proposals for projects designed to help family practice residents become more aware of the challenges faced by families of children with disabilities. RAMP then approached the Family Practice Residency Program, University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford (UICOM-R), regarding their interest in this project.

University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford  (UICOM-R)
Since 1972, the Family Practice Residency Program, University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford (UICOM-R) has provided comprehensive primary care training for residents. As of July 2001, 263 family practice residents have completed the three-year residency programs and begun careers in primary care  practice, teaching, and research. Currently, 27 residents are enrolled in the program, nine in each of the three years of residency training.

The following is, "Developing Curriculum Models in Developmental Disabilities," a video which highlights the program and features interviews from doctors, residents and families who have participated in the Parent Partners In Health Education program. Hear their feedback and learn more about the program. RealPlayer is required to view the 8-minute video. Click here for free RealPlayer Download.
